Training

The Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office Training Academy is a program certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (D.C.J.S). The Basic Academy prepares recruits to serve the citizens of Portsmouth through rigorous training on a range of subjects not limited to, but including:

  • Crime Scene Investigation
  • Tactical Communication
  • Firearms
  • Defensive Tactics

All classes are taught on-site, and our Basic Academy curriculum is governed by structured discipline guidelines, which prepare Deputy Sheriffs to manage potential law enforcement-related stress.
